Borrowing limits

Dependent undergraduate students.
Students who do not meet the criteria for an independent student.
  • Up to $2,625 for your freshman year
  • Up to $3,500 for your sophomore year
  • Up to $5,500 for each remaining undergraduate year
Independent undergraduate students. A student who is either 24 years or older, married, a veteran, an orphan or ward of the court, or who has legal dependents other than a spouse. Graduate and professional students also quality as independent students.
  • Up to $6,625 for your freshman year (at least $4,000 must be in unsubsidized loan)
  • Up to $7,500 for your sophomore year (at least $4,000 must be in unsubsidized loan)
  • Up to $10,500 for your junior year (at least $5,000 must be in unsubsidized loan)
  • Up to $10,500 for your senior year (at least $5,000 must be in unsubsidized loan)

Graduate students

  • Up to $18,500 for the full academic year ($8,500 subsidized, $10,000 unsubsidized)

Health Professional students

  • Graduate students enrolled at least half time at an eligible, U.S.-based school in the following medical disciplines: Allopathic, Osteopathic, Dentistry, Optometry, Podiatric, Veterinary and Chiropractic
  • The annual loan limits are up to $8,500 for subsidized loans and up to $30,000 for unsubsidized loans
